Meet our Liberators …

The Liberator Model upskills parents and caregivers to be paid tutors, providing high-dosage tutoring in some of the lowest-performing schools.

Changing the future for Black and Brown families

The Liberator Model

Liberators are primarily Black and Latino parents, caregivers, grandparents, aunties, and uncles, many with their children in Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Literacy and Math Liberators participate in a multi-week, paid fellowship where they receive research-based literacy training, leadership development, and culture building. We also provide application and onboarding support to help place our Liberators in OUSD schools.

Our model addresses five academic and social-economic needs of both students and families

Liberating Black and Brown communities

Our results are promising

We partnered with the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) to study our model and they found that our tutors are just as effective as classroom teachers in helping students make literacy gains.

We're building on success

We’ve partnered with Oakland Unified School District to expand our Liberator Model to include math.
We’ve codified our model for impact and scale.
We’re sharing our model nationally.

Being a Literacy Liberator means being a student AND a teacher - you're teaching kiddos to read and you're also learning how to correctly teach them to read.”

For a lot of children it gives them comfort to know it's a mom, auntie, cousin - it's someone that looks like them.”
