New Partnerships and New People!

Friends,

Excited to share some big news: The Oakland REACH — together with OUSD — was just selected as one of six partnerships nationwide that will receive $900,000 (!!) to develop our learning Hub model!

This incredible funding from the Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) and TNTP (formerly The New Teacher Project) will allow us to join forces with the district to expand our Hub to six (6) schools and hire 30+ literacy tutors and family liaisons. This partnership is about building on what The REACH has proven works so even more students and families can access high-quality education and enrichments. As Robin Lake, Director of CRPE, said about our expansion: “It’s hard not to get excited about what The Oakland REACH is doing.”

This pandemic — as horrible and crippling as it’s been — has created a huge opportunity to shift the way we do education, and deliver on our families’ desire to not go back to normal.  Our parents and students have experienced what high-quality learning looks like from our Hub — they’ve experienced privilege. It’s what they've been fighting and struggling for, but never got from the system — until The REACH made it happen.

As a result, the demand is massive — we’ve grown from 200 students in the Hub last summer, to currently over 400 students. With our OUSD partnership, the Hub will impact close to 1,000 students by the summer. If you want to learn more about our Hub expansion, check out this interview Robin and I both participated in with EdSource.

Whether school is virtual or in-person — pandemic or no pandemic — that doesn’t change our parents’ aspirations for their children to go to college. That’s why we’ve got to keep going and growing our Hub! Thank you for your support to keep this work going.
