We know that math skills unlock children's futures, but not enough Black and Brown students in Oakland are doing math on grade level. Our kids can excel, and they don’t have time to wait. The good news? YOU can be part of the solution!
In the 2023-2024 school year, OUSD and REACH launched a math tutoring model to help students in grades 3-5 accelerate their math skills. The program is expanding and we need community members like YOU to be the tutors our youth need.

Become a PAID Math Liberator! Math Liberators are paid tutors in OUSD.
We’re looking for people who know our students the best — parents, family members, and community members from Oakland — to help set students up for success through high-dosage tutoring.
Join our Fellowship training to learn math-specific skills, leadership skills, and receive support onboarding into paid positions as tutors in OUSD. No previous tutoring experience is required!

Who can apply to the Fellowship?
All applicants should have a strong desire to become math tutors and must meet the following basic requirements for the Fellowship:
Be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
Be at least 18 years or older
Have proficiency in English to effectively tutor students in math
Hold a High School diploma or GED equivalent
Be open to placement in any school where tutoring support is needed (reasonable accommodations will be considered)
Participants in the Fellowship will become candidates for tutoring positions in OUSD. OUSD will make final hiring decisions. Candidates selected for the Math Liberator Fellowship actively engage in the OUSD hiring process, which includes fingerprinting and TB screening, in compliance with federal and state laws.
How can I apply to the Math Liberator Fellowship?

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Given the volume of applications, we cannot provide individual status updates to all applicants. Rest assured, if your application meets our selection criteria, you will be contacted to proceed to the next stage.
The selection process generally involves: an initial application review, a phone interview for qualified candidates, and an in-person group interview in Oakland for those who advance. As part of the interview, applicants must take an assessment in math.
What is it like to be a Math Liberator (tutor) in OUSD?
Great question!
Math Liberators work with small groups of students in grades 3-5, in-person at OUSD schools.
In a day, a Liberator will teach math lessons (using curriculum OUSD provides) and support students in their classroom while the general education teacher provides instruction.
You will receive support through the Fellowship to help you build your skills as a tutor. Liberators receive support to be a great tutor through coaching and professional development. No previous tutoring experience is required!
What is the pay & hours for Math Liberators?
All Fellows should intend on becoming a Math Liberator (tutors) in OUSD. Participants in the Fellowship will become candidates for tutoring positions in OUSD. OUSD will make final hiring decisions.
If hired by OUSD, Math Liberators receive benefits and are compensated at an hourly rate.

Math Liberators work 30 hours a week, 5 days a week: Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm during the school year.
What is the time commitment for the Fellowship?
The Fellowship is a 5-week commitment. Fellows are expected to attend all sessions. Most are evening sessions with some additional daytime commitments, including a school site visit, 1:1 check-ins, and professional development days.
Sessions begin on June 24 & end on July 31.
