The Evolution of REACH

From the very beginning, The Oakland REACH’s work has been grounded in a hard truth: too many Black and Brown children have been denied real opportunity, and systems have kept families on the sidelines

REACH exists because we believe families are the solution. Our formula — Ask families questions. Listen to their aspirations. Build the solutions. Liberate our communities — has produced a mix of groundbreaking solutions.

The Opportunity Ticket expanded access to some of OUSD’s most sought-after schools for families facing school closures. The Literacy for All campaign brought families across Oakland and 30 community organizations together in partnership to advocate for the science of reading. The Virtual Family Hub supported families’ economic survival and their children’s educational success during the pandemic.

The Liberator Model trained parents and caregivers to become tutors in some of Oakland’s lowest-performing schools, accelerating student learning. What started in Oakland expanded to five additional cities, reaching 5,200+ students nationwide.

Now, The REACH Parent District, a tech-enabled model that certifies the best high-impact virtual tutoring providers and bridges them directly to lower-income families. Additionally, families receive timely, relevant, and actionable Family Success Coaching that empowers them to optimize the tutoring partnership.

At REACH, we have always been solutions builders. At every step, we’ve responded to what our children needed and built solutions alongside our families. With each solution, families gained more power, more tools, and more proximity to results.

This makes our work not only innovative but revolutionary.
